Hey! I am back again with the review of a novel which I had read years ago and never got bored with despite the fact that I had read this thousand times.
Firstly, from the outside, you can see that the physical form of this book does not generally appeal that much because the cover is mostly black with a fume in the center of it, although some people might find it interesting (including me). I find interest in simplicity. Once I read that the writer was John Green, I became more interested in reading it. Moreover, I found some people talked about it on the internet and bragged about how great the novel was. I decided to buy it then.
I finished the novel in one day and I had the urge to read it over and over again because… damn, the novel was that good. Looking for Alaska tells the story of Miles Halter—who got “Pudge” as his nickname—that just moved to Culver Creek Boarding School. The big fan of famous last words was far from the word ‘safe’ when he found some new friends there, such as The Colonel, Takumi and last but not least, Alaska (actually he had more friends but there is no way I would list them one by one. Just read the book if you want to know more 😉)
Alaska was this clever, gorgeous-looking, amusing and fascinating girl who successfully pulled Pudge into her world, introducing him to whatever had been happening in her life and eventually found the fun in it. She also succeeded in making Pudge fall for her slowly without even trying that hard. Pudge's life just changed significantly and he had been enjoying it ever since. Until something happened that changed his life forever.
This story was started by flashbacks to one hundred thirty-six days before, where he had one week left before he moved to the boarding school. Everything that happened there was so different from everything that he had thought before. He enjoyed every second of it, although not everything that occurred was great. Plus, he had Alaska's existence accompanying him every day and she kept him fascinated each day just by being herself. Without himself realizing, he had been falling in love with Alaska Young.
Everything was going great until something happened between them all and it just changed them forever. Pudge and his friends tried their best to solve this. However, nothing changed much, except their perspectives. I could not explain more because I eventually would just spoil everything, which is not a really good thing to do, hahaha.
On a scale from 0 to 10, I'd rate this book 8.5/10 because it keeps you awake and amazed by the plotline. The scenes from this book are also great if you can imagine them. John Green had used the perfect words to describe the scenes and everything that happened in the book. Well, yeah. It is John Green. So, no wonder. But, seriously. You have to read this. My friend who has read it told me that she had read this more than five times and she is still unavailable to find any boredom in Looking for Alaska.
I know this might be a very subjective review, but even you can see on Goodreads that it has a very positive review, scoring 4.06 out of 5. Plus, if you are a fan of what-so-seem-indie quotes, you may give this book a try. And I believe you can always learn from something, which means there will always be a thing that you can take from anything, including this novel. This might be a fiction, but John Green always has that ability to bring you into the story and feel like it is real. I totally recommend this novel.
Let me know in the comment section what you think about this novel if you have read them before, and if you haven't, please do! Would love to hear your opinions on Looking for Alaska.
Until next time.
